PASION Fruit

PASION Fruit is a game of sustainable fruit trading. Players have fruit gardens, which grow one type of fruit at the start of the game. The type of fruit is determined by their country, so British players grow Apples, Pears and Strawberries, where Italians can grow Lemons, Grapes and Olives.

In order to get a higher scoring garden, players need to give fruit gifts to one another. However, the further a fruit has to travel, the greater the environmental impact. To be successful, players were forced to balance diversity against sustainability in their virtual gardens.

A limited version of PASION Fruit is available to play online.

Research Focus

PASION Fruit aimed to investigate the nature of how socio-contextual feedback can affect user behaviour in games. It also tested how random grouping in social games can increase user engagement.

Research Outputs

Analysis and dissemination of PASION Fruit results is still ongoing. However a theory paper about emergence in social games includes PASION Fruit as a case study:

Kirman, Ben (2010) Emergence and playfulness in social games. In: MindTrek 2010, 6th October – 8th October 2010, Tampere, Finland.

The PASION Project

This work was carried out as part of the PASION Project.
PASION was an EU integrated project, funded under the Framework 6 Programme.
PASION Fruit was developed as part of the EU funded PASION project. In this project, LiSC collaborated with 17 partner universities and organisations around Europe. The aims of the project were to investigate the nature of social interactions when mediated by the Internet. LiSC led the social gaming strand of PASION.
